Canon Chancellor

Sheffield Cathedral is inviting applications for the role of Canon Chancellor, a residentiary canon and member of Chapter, at an important moment in the Cathedral’s life.

At the heart of a changing and creative city, Sheffield Cathedral is both an ancient holy place and a living centre of worship, culture, and public engagement. Each year, thousands of people come through our doors to pray, worship, learn, attend concerts and exhibitions, or find welcome and sanctuary in the city centre. We are committed to being a place for all people, holding together daily prayer, joyful worship, and careful stewardship of our life and resources.

Closing date for applications: Thursday 19 February 2026 (12 noon).

A role rooted in prayer, governance, and delivery

The Canon Chancellor is a senior leadership role, combining a full share in the Cathedral’s liturgical and praying life with responsibility for governance, strategy, and delivery. As one of two full-time Commissioners’ Canons, the post-holder will be a trustee of the Cathedral, a member of Chapter and the Senior Leadership Team, and will play a key role in sustaining and strengthening areas central to the Cathedral’s mission.

We are seeking a priest who brings a calm, detail-aware approach to leadership, with particular responsibility for three closely connected strands of the Cathedral’s work:

1. Education and learning

The Canon Chancellor will lead the development of the Cathedral’s adult education programme and oversee its schools and families engagement, ensuring a high-quality, sustainable educational offer that serves the Diocese, the city, and communities who may not otherwise encounter the Cathedral. This includes working closely with colleagues to connect learning with mission, worship, music, and the wider life of the Cathedral.

2. Heritage and the arts

Building on Sheffield Cathedral’s rich history and cultural life, the Canon Chancellor will help bring the Cathedral’s heritage to life and place it within the wider story of Sheffield. Working with artists, cultural partners, and civic institutions, the role will support exhibitions, events, and commissions that make the Cathedral accessible, engaging, and meaningful for a wide range of audiences.

3. Fundraising and development

At a crucial stage in the Cathedral’s development, the Canon Chancellor will work closely with colleagues to help shape and deliver a coherent fundraising and development strategy. This includes supporting a culture of generous giving, strengthening visitor and congregational income, and contributing to the Cathedral’s long-term financial sustainability.

Who we are seeking

We are looking for a priest who will be nourished by cathedral worship; brings strategic, emotionally intelligent, and detail-orientated leadership; is a natural completer-finisher; and will work collaboratively with clergy, staff and volunteers. Above all, we seek someone who loves people and will help the Cathedral live out its vocation to be a place for all people at the heart of Sheffield.
