Scholarship Opportunities

Sheffield Cathedral offers a range of music scholarships as part of our ambition to put education at the heart of our mission and ministry.

At Sheffield Cathedral, we offer:

  • Choral Scholarships - For singers in full-time study

  • Organ Scholarships - For aspiring pianists or organists aged 14-18

Choral Scholarships

Sheffield Cathedral offers choral scholarships to sopranos, altos, tenors and basses who are undergraduate or postgraduate students at one of the Sheffield universities. Each scholarship lasts for one academic year with the possibility for extension; typically, our scholars stay at the Cathedral for the duration of their study. The value of the scholarship is worth approximately £2800 per annum. The choral scholars sing for the three choral services per week, with a regular programme of concerts and extra events which attract additional fees.

The choir sings an ambitious range of music from the 11th century to the present day; to sample our music from the past three months please see the Music List page.

How to Apply

We advertise applications for choral scholarships on our Vacancies page so please check there to find out more information. If you have further questions please contact music@sheffield-cathedral.org.uk

Organ Scholarships

Sheffield Cathedral offers two Junior Organ Scholarships for organists and pianists aged 14-18, as part of a renewed vision for music at the cathedral. Education is at the heart of the scholarships: organ scholars will have regular opportunities to perform in the cathedral and to engage with music-making in the cathedral more broadly. Whilst prior organ experience is desirable, we are also very interested to hear from pianists at approximately ABRSM Grade 5 standard or above who are keen to start learning the organ. Benefits include free organ tuition with the Cathedral musicians and a bursary for purchasing organ music.

In an average week, the organ scholar would be expected to be present for cathedral choir services on Tuesday evenings and both the 10:30 Sunday Eucharist and 16:00 Choral Evensong. We would also be prepared to tailor the scholarship around each individual scholar (for example, if they already had a Sunday morning playing commitment at a local parish church).
