“At Christmas and always, Sheffield Cathedral is a place for everyone – a home of light, hope, and welcome at the heart of our city.”
— The Very Revd Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield
This year, the Cathedral bursts into life with a rich tapestry of experiences that bring together the joy, mystery and togetherness of Christmas. Stepping through the doors, you’ll be met with a festive atmosphere that celebrates community and creativity in truly unique ways.
One of the first major moments of the season is the return of our Christmas Tree Festival, where more than 40 sparkling trees — each decorated by a local charity, school, business or community group — fill the Cathedral with colour and warmth. From early December, this much-loved display creates a magical backdrop for all who visit, whether you’re exploring with family or simply taking a peaceful pause in the midst of the city’s winter bustle.
This year also brings something extraordinary to our walls: a brand-new artwork by Sheffield’s own Pete McKee, titled The Nativity. Vibrant, witty and full of heart, McKee’s painting celebrates the joyful chaos of a school nativity while highlighting the Cathedral’s Schools Singing Programme and the vital work of the Archer Project. The artwork will take up permanent residence in the Cathedral — and visitors can even pick up exclusive McKee gifts from the 1554 shop.
As December unfolds, the Cathedral becomes a beacon of light both inside and out. During Light Up Sheffield, the building will be illuminated with breathtaking projections inspired by the city’s stories, heritage and creativity — including a special nod to our new McKee commission. Inside, families can embark on the Glow Quest, a glow-in-the-dark adventure trail that promises neon clues, torchlit mysteries and plenty of festive fun.
Of course, music lies at the heart of Christmas at Sheffield Cathedral. From the majesty of Handel’s Messiah, performed by the Cathedral Choir and West Riding Ensemble, to the uplifting energy of our Gospel Christmas concerts, or the beautiful Candlelit Christmas Concert, the season is filled with opportunities to be inspired by world-class music in a breathtaking setting.
Alongside the celebrations, the Cathedral continues its tradition of beautiful services that mark the spiritual heart of Christmas. The Advent Procession, Christingle, Crib Services, Carol Service and Midnight Mass invite us into moments of reflection, candlelight, storytelling and shared hope — culminating in the profound stillness and joy of Christmas Eve.
Whether you join us to sing carols, admire the lights, enjoy family activities, or seek a moment of stillness or prayer, Christmas at the Cathedral is for everyone.
Our free booklet brings every concert, activity and service together in one place, helping you plan your perfect festive visit.
