Sheffield Cathedral is delighted to welcome artist and researcher Helen Blejerman as Artist in Residence this August.
Helen’s work confronts urgent global issues, exploring femicide in Mexico and how religion shapes mourning, alongside the tireless search of families for missing loved ones. Her practice combines forensic evidence, personal narratives, and film to address gender-based violence and social injustice. She is currently a PhD researcher at Sheffield Hallam University.
Over two weeks in August, Helen will create two site-specific installations in the Cathedral that respond to her ongoing research.
Ceremonial Ritual uses everyday materials such as plastic bags and duct tape to reflect on disappearance and dehumanisation.
Cartonland uses cardboard to construct a fragile landscape that speaks to instability, migration, and displacement.
Visitors are warmly invited to say hello and watch Helen at work between 1–3pm on weekdays in the Old St George’s Chapel, where she will be developing her pieces.
Both works will be unveiled in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on 25–26 August, where visitors can also meet Helen from 1–3pm each day.
