This Sunday marks a joyful milestone in the life of Sheffield Cathedral as, for the first time since the reintroduction of children as probationer choristers last September, our newest young singers will be formally admitted into the Cathedral Choir.
Over the past months, these probationer choristers have shown remarkable dedication, learning the foundations of choral singing, music theory, vocal technique, and the rhythms of Cathedral worship. From singing Evensong and Compline to learning how to process, organise music, and serve with confidence and reverence, they are now ready to become full members of the choir team.
As these young choristers take this exciting next step, we give thanks for the joy, commitment, and energy they bring to our worshipping life.
Director of Music, Tom Daggett, said:
“A milestone in the life of any Cathedral Choir is the first time a child receives their surplice. This outer sign of recognition reflects months of turning up after school, rain or shine, and learning the ropes of music theory, vocal technique, and covering the repertoire of the Eucharist, Evensong, and Compline.
“To me personally, this is a moment for great rejoicing. We take a ‘whole life’ approach to music – learning to sing is the greatest gift we can give to a child, as it gives them a voice and new language which remains with them for a lifetime. Following a season of our worship being led solely by a choir of university students and adults, choristers complete the restoration of Sheffield Cathedral Choir.”
The Cathedral’s Schools Singing Programme has helped create pathways for children across the city to grow in confidence and become choristers, strengthening the Cathedral’s connection with its wider communities.
We are delighted to officially welcome these young singers into the Cathedral Choir family and look forward to supporting them as they continue their musical and spiritual journey.
