Celebrating the Volunteers Who Make Cathedral Life Possible

As we mark National Volunteers' Week, Sheffield Cathedral is taking the opportunity to celebrate and thank the incredible volunteers whose dedication, generosity and commitment help make Cathedral life possible every single day.

From welcoming visitors through our doors and guiding tours, to arranging flowers, supporting school visits, stewarding events, assisting in retail, operating the sound desk and helping with administration, volunteers play a vital role across every area of Cathedral life. They are often the first friendly face people encounter when they visit, helping to ensure that everyone who comes to Sheffield Cathedral feels welcomed, supported and valued.

Without our volunteers, the life of our community simply would not function as smoothly as it does.

To celebrate National Volunteers' Week, we hosted a special lunch in the Nave, bringing together volunteers from both Sheffield Cathedral and the Archer Project. The event was an opportunity to recognise the enormous contribution they make and to thank them for the countless hours they give in service to others.

During the celebration, Dean Abi spoke about the impact volunteers have on the Cathedral community and the difference their dedication makes every day.

Over the past year, Sheffield Cathedral has continued to strengthen and grow its volunteer programme, thanks in large part to the work of Denise Lawrenson, Visitor Experience Coordinator. Since joining the team, Denise has championed volunteers across the Cathedral, recruiting new team members, delivering training, gathering feedback and creating opportunities for volunteers to connect through regular lunches and events.

As a result, nearly 50 new volunteers have joined the Cathedral community over the last year, helping to expand what we can offer to visitors and groups.

Thanks to the commitment of our volunteer tour guides, Sheffield Cathedral has also introduced bespoke group tours and the increasingly popular After Hours Tours, giving more people the opportunity to discover the Cathedral's rich history, heritage and stories in new and engaging ways.

Denise Lawrenson, Visitor Experience Coordinator, said:

"Our volunteers are truly at the heart of Sheffield Cathedral. Every person brings their own skills, experience and personality, helping to create a warm welcome for everyone who walks through our doors. Whether they're greeting visitors, leading tours, arranging flowers, supporting events or working behind the scenes, their contribution is invaluable.

"We're always looking for more people to get involved. There are opportunities to suit a wide range of interests and abilities, and volunteering is a fantastic way to meet new people, learn new skills and become part of a vibrant and supportive community."

Volunteers also make a huge contribution to the Cathedral's education programme, supporting the hundreds of children and young people who visit each year through schools and community groups.

Charlotte Roberts, Head of Education, said:

"Our volunteers play an essential role in helping us deliver inspiring and memorable experiences for children and young people who visit Sheffield Cathedral. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and willingness to engage with pupils help bring the Cathedral's history, heritage and faith to life in a way that is meaningful and accessible.”

Charlotte also paid particular tribute to volunteer Revd Richard Walton, whose enthusiasm and dedication have helped make countless school visits memorable and engaging.

Schools consistently provide positive feedback about their experiences at Sheffield Cathedral, with volunteers playing a key role in bringing history, faith and learning to life for young visitors.

As we celebrate National Volunteers' Week, we extend our heartfelt thanks to every volunteer who gives their time, skills and energy to support Sheffield Cathedral and the Archer Project. Whether serving behind the scenes or meeting visitors face-to-face, each volunteer helps us continue to be a place for all people.
