Christine Receives Newgate Volunteer of the Year Award at Sheffield Cathedral

There were smiles all round in the Nave this week as Sheffield Cathedral hosted a heartwarming celebration for Christine, our much-loved volunteer, who was recently named the 2025 Newgate Volunteer of the Year by the Association of English Cathedrals.

Joined by fellow volunteers from Sheffield Cathedral, the Archer Project, and Choir with No Name, Christine was formally presented with her award by Nigel Williams from Newgate, sponsors of the award, and Anna Pitt and Jane Bower from the Association of English Cathedrals. The room was filled with chatter, laughter, and well-deserved applause as guests enjoyed nibbles and refreshments in honour of this special moment.

Dean Abi spoke with heartfelt thanks about the incredible impact Christine has made over her six years of volunteering, whether welcoming visitors, guiding tours, or lovingly caring for the Cathedral’s textiles. From restoring altar cloths to creating clothing for school workshops, her work touches almost every corner of Cathedral life.

Nigel shared how moving it had been to read nominations from across the UK and what a difficult decision it was to choose just one winner, but Christine’s passion and dedication made a lasting impression. Jane added how lovely it was to meet Christine in person and witness her receive such a richly deserved honour.

Christine, clearly touched by the occasion, shared how proud she felt to be recognised and how much it meant to her to celebrate with friends and fellow volunteers.

And there’s more to come: from 21 July until 2 August, Christine will be showcasing her extraordinary work in a special exhibition at Sheffield Cathedral called ‘Creative Textiles'. Spanning decades of skill and creativity, including pieces from her student days, the display will offer a rare glimpse into the hands behind much of Sheffield Cathedral’s charm.

It was a joyful afternoon that reminded everyone of the quiet, faithful contributions that help keep places like Sheffield Cathedral alive with love, care, and community.
