Sheffield Cathedral is thrilled to announce that Christine Barker, a dedicated volunteer for six years, has been named the recipient of the Association of English Cathedrals’ Volunteer of the Year Award. Dean Abi made the announcement during the recent Volunteers’ Week celebrations, which came as a wonderful surprise to Christine.
Christine's invaluable contributions to Sheffield Cathedral span multiple vital roles. As a Welcomer, she's often the first friendly face visitors encounter, creating an atmosphere of hospitality and inclusion with her calm, approachable presence and warm greetings. Her deep knowledge and love of the building shine through as she guides visitors, sharing the Cathedral's rich history and spiritual heritage with infectious passion.
However, it's in her role as Seamstress that Christine truly excels and showcases her lifelong textile expertise. With meticulous attention to detail, patience, and quiet devotion, her skilled hands lovingly manage all aspects of the Cathedral’s needlework. This includes intricate embroidery, restoration of precious liturgical garments and military treasures, and the creation of new pieces such as altar cloths, vestments, and even costumes for the Cathedral’s education program, including a complete set of children’s vestments, Pilgrims’ capes, and Nativity clothes.
Dean Abi lauded Christine’s incredible skill and dedication, stating, “Christine is a wonderful volunteer at Sheffield Cathedral. She turns her hand to anything, including fitting an emergency zip for me on one occasion! Her skill is incredible – every stitch is perfect and every piece she makes or restores is utterly exquisite. A true professional, the time she freely gives us is a wonderful gift. I’m thrilled she has won!”
A highlight of Christine’s recent work includes the painstaking restoration of the Altar Frontal from the Shrewsbury Chapel, a process known as "deconstruction" where she carefully restores deteriorated areas beneath 95-year-old goldwork. She also previously brought a beautiful altar frontal in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, featuring a golden leather dove, back to life after its complete disintegration, painstakingly replacing each element by hand.
Christine’s work not only supports the Cathedral’s daily ministry but also meticulously preserves its heritage. Her unwavering commitment, diverse talents, and kindness embody the very best of volunteering at Sheffield Cathedral, making it a more welcoming, beautiful, and enriching place for all.
Sheffield Cathedral extends its heartfelt thanks to Christine and every volunteer – past, present, and future – who chooses to give their time in service of others. Their efforts are woven into the very fabric of the Cathedral’s life, ensuring its doors remain open and its mission flourishes.
