Chapter Updates: July 2022

Read the update from Chapter’s meeting in July 2022.

There was no Chapter meeting held in June due to interviews for the permanent COO taking place.

Finance

The Cathedral’s finances are currently in a healthy position.  Consideration will be given, during the summer, to budgets for 2023.

Safeguarding

Siân Checkley, the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor, attended Chapter to talk about how the Diocesan Team will be working more closely with the Cathedral over the coming months.

New COO

The Dean confirmed that Jason Carr has been appointed as the permanent Chief Operating Officer (COO) and that he will join the Cathedral Team on Wednesday 12 October.  The Interim COO, Des Scott, will continue in his role until the end of July, and will return to complete a handover with Jason when he arrives.

Other Appointments

Emily Whalley has joined the staff team as a Communications Assistant.  This is a part-time post focussing on external communication, promotion, and publicity, working closely with our social media provider.

1554 has also been recruiting – there are now three additional casual staff in the Coffee Shop and a part-time Retail Assistant to cover both the Coffee and Gift Shops.

Cathedral Music

From September the music will be largely provided by an increased number of Choral Scholars, supported by two of our current professional singers – Beth Winter and Chris Why.

A bid is to be submitted to the Hamish Ogston Foundation, under their National Schools Singing Programme (NSSP).  If successful, this grant will support the development of the Music Department and enable the Cathedral to work more closely with schools across South Yorkshire.

Ministry Experience Scheme

The Dean confirmed that there are now two candidates who are ready to begin placements in September.  Their 12 months with the Cathedral will run as an academic year until August 2023.

Interim COO Report

As there will be no Chapter meeting in August, this will be Des Scott’s final report.  He thanked Chapter for the opportunity to work with them and to be part of the Cathedral Team, and voiced his praise and admiration for all of the staff, (including those in 1554, and the volunteer team), and for their amazing contribution to the life and mission of the Cathedral.  Chapter members expressed their gratitude to Des for the work that he has completed during his time here.

The next meeting was scheduled for 26th September.
