Chapter Updates: May 2022

Read the update from Chapter’s meeting in May 2022.

Finance

It was noted that Voluntary Giving is the Cathedral’s key income source, and that it needs to be developed further. One of the options under consideration is to engage with the Parish Giving Scheme – this is a ‘not for profit’ organisation set up specifically to support churches in maximising their income from giving. More than 350 churches in the UK, across 30+ Dioceses, are currently signed up to this scheme.

The Cathedral Enterprise (1554 Coffee & Gift Shop) showed a small profit at the end of the first quarter, as people begin to return following the pandemic.

Events

The Events & Operations Manager, together with the Development Manager, have submitted a bid to host a UEFA Conference as part of the Women’s Football Championships taking place in Sheffield and a number of other venues in the UK.

Contracts have been signed with Peter Walker and Luxmuralis for the Christmas light show – The Manger. Plans are also underway for a ‘Peace Doves’ installation in the autumn

Young Adults Group

The Dean, together with other clergy colleagues, hosted an event for Young Adults following on from the evening service yesterday (29 May). It was encouraging to see young people connecting with one another and starting to build new friendships.

Affirming Prayer Vigil

On Wednesday 25 May, Franklin Graham (son of the late evangelist, Billy Graham) held an event at Sheffield Arena. Some Christians expressed concern about the very conservative views held by Franklin Graham, and the impact this might have. In response to these concerns, an event was held at the Cathedral and was attended by around 60 people who all agreed that it was a very gentle evening, with an emphasis on love and acceptance.

Ministry Experience Scheme

This Scheme is operated by the Church of England and offers placements to people engaged in the discernment process (possibly with a view to ordained ministry). The Diocese of Sheffield has engaged with the scheme sporadically over the years, and the Dean is now keen for the Cathedral to become involved. The Diocese has agreed that the Cathedral should host a small number of participants over the next 12 months, linking with the Diocese to provide parish experience.
