Lunchtime Recital: Lindsay Aitkenhead

  • Sheffield Cathedral Church Street Sheffield S1 1HA (map)

We invite musicians from near and far to share their musical talent with us. All are welcome!

Lindsay Aitkenhead studied the Viola in Folk Music for her doctorate at the University of Sheffield, taking viola lessons with Hilary Hart and more recently with Neil Clarke and Ruth Gibson. She has taught at both the Sheffield Universities and at Birmingham Conservatoire.

Her performing career began in 1979 when she put a pickup on her viola and formed the punk band Mnemonics, and later on included a national Arts Council tour with the electric string quartet Acrobats of Desire. She toured with klezmer bands Tashbain and Zhok Hora in Britain and Italy, and has performed and composed for theatre, most recently with Artizani Theatre Company in "The Cabaret of Dr Caligari".

Accompanying Lindsay is Tom Owen. Tom is a pianist, conductor, composer and tutor based in Sheffield. As an accompanist, Tom has worked for Leeds Conservatoire, Mount St Mary's College, the Worksop Festival of Music and Drama, and Bailey-Cox Dance Academy. He is a tutor, accompanist and choral conductor at Sheffield Music Academy.

Tom's compositions have been performed by artists such as Ensemble 360, Opera on Location and world-renowned pianist Philip Thomas, often in collaboration with the Platform 4: Contemporary Composers collective. He worked on the completion of Leonard Bernstein's unfinished ballet Conch Town, which finally received its full premiere at the BBC Proms in 2018.

This recital is based on Lindsay’s LRSM diploma programme from July 2022.
