Holy Week at Sheffield Cathedral

Holy Week and Easter stand at the heart of the Christian year - the days when we walk most closely with Jesus through love, betrayal, suffering, silence, and finally into the transforming joy of resurrection.

At Sheffield Cathedral, we invite you to share in this sacred journey. We begin with the waving of palms and the hopeful cries of “Hosanna”, as Christ enters Jerusalem in humility. We gather at the table, remembering a love poured out in bread and wine. We keep watch in the shadowed stillness of Gethsemane. We stand at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday, where the depth of God’s love meets the depth of human pain. And then, in the quiet darkness of Easter Eve, a new fire is kindled - light breaking into the night, hope rising where all seemed lost - as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

These days are marked by some of the Church’s most beautiful music and richest liturgy, filled with symbols and actions that connect us with Christians across the world and across the centuries.

Come and see. Come and walk the story. Whoever you are, you are welcome here.

The Very Reverend Abi Thompson
Dean of Sheffield
