Human beings are vulnerable to circumstances which leave them feeling powerless. Examples include chronic illness and terminal diagnoses. But what it is really like to feel powerless? And is there a way to respond to such experiences? In this session, we explore ideas of power and powerlessness. We focus especially on testimony in which patients report feeling that, because of their circumstances, they have lost the power to be themselves. What is the power that these patients feel themselves to have lost? And how might they try to recover it?
