Sheffield Cathedral Schola Cantorum is a choir designed to give young women (18+), particularly (but not exclusively) University Undergraduates, an opportunity to sing liturgically within the pattern of Cathedral worship. The Schola also sings concerts, mainly at the Cathedral, but also at other venues around the City and region, and next year work with the BBC is planned.
The choir’s schedule is as follows:
In addition, the choir sings on some Sundays during half-terms, the Eucharist on Ash Wednesday and takes part in the Cathedral’s preparations for Christmas. A list of planned services and music for the current academic year can be found here.
With regard to the Cathedral’s Strategic Vision, the introduction of this group and the new young people it is bringing to the Cathedral community contributes to promoting our choral worship, in particular, the weekday services.
Current membership includes students from the two Sheffield universities, gap-year students and young professionals. If you are interested in joining the Schola Cantorum, please contact the Choir’s Director, Anthony Gowing (Assistant Director of Music at Sheffield Cathedral) either by e-mail () or by telephone (0114 263 6070).
The Schola Cantorum recently took part in BBC Radio 4’s long-running Daily Service programme on Tuesday 22nd February. The broadcast included two well-known hymns and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford’s ‘A Song of Battle’.
