FAQs

How do I book?

Contact us by e-mail, or by telephone (0114 275 3434) and we will be pleased to negotiate a date for your visit and discuss your requirements. Where possible, assistance is offered with the planning of your visit.

You will receive confirmation of your visit after it has been booked in the Cathedral diary.

How far ahead should I book?

At least four weeks in advance. If you have a particular date in mind it is best to give as much advance notice as possible, especially if you would like a visit tailored to your pupils' particular needs. The Cathedral hosts hundreds of functions annually. It is essential to contact the Cathedral for available dates before arranging transport.

Can I bring a group of children without booking a guided visit?

You are, of course, welcome to self-guide a group around the Cathedral but please do telephone first in order to book your visit into the diary. Information can be downloaded from this website or there are leaflets available within the Cathedral.

How much will it cost?

Our half day visits are currently free of charge. Donations, however small, are always welcome.

Where can we eat lunch?

Weather permitting, packed lunches can be eaten on the grassed areas around the Cathedral. If a room is required this has to be booked in advance.

What about risk assessment?

A generic LA risk assessment has been completed for Sheffield Cathedral and can be downloaded from this website. This needs to be finalised by the school to meet the needs of the visiting group. We strongly advise staff/group leaders to make a preliminary visit.

On arrival, where can the coach park?

There is no car park at the Cathedral. Coaches are able to drop off and pick up directly outside the Cathedral, for the purpose of allowing pupils to alight. There is a car park on Campo Lane, at the back of the Cathedral.

Where do we come on arrival for a guided visit?

Come to the Cathedral entrance, where you will be met by the a member of the Cathedral staff. Your bags and coats will be put in a secure place for the duration of the visit.

What about disabled access?

Please inform us of any special needs your group may have so that we can make your visit run as smoothly as possible. We have level access into the Cathedral and wheelchair access to many but not all parts of the Cathedral.

What is expected of teachers?

Teachers and helpers should stay with their group at all times and experience the Trails and Workshops alongside their pupils. Unless it has been planned otherwise, they will not necessarily be expected to give any input to these sessions. At all times during the visit, teachers will, of course, be responsible for the control and supervision of their group.

Please ensure that your pupils understand the need for quiet in a place of worship.
