Become a Friend of Sheffield Cathedral

The Work of the Friends

The Friends of Sheffield Cathedral was founded in 1997.

Our purpose is to support the ministry and mission of the Cathedral, to preserve and enhance the building and its arts, and to raise awareness of the Cathedral in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond, by:

  • Assisting and supporting the Dean and Chapter in maintaining and improving the services, music, fabric, fittings, ornaments and facilities of the Cathedral.
  • Contributing resources to enhance the interpretation of the heritage and spirituality of the Cathedral.
  • Encouraging the interest and participation of young people through the arts, education and other activities.
  • Stimulating and maintaining public interest in the Cathedral.

Each year the Friends organise exciting and interesting events.

We support Cathedral services and activities, particularly activities involving the Cathedral musicians. Recently we have commissioned a new chalice, paten and ciborium, designed by a local artist as part of the Galvanize Festival.

Achievements

In line with our aims, recent contributions and achievements made as a result of the Friends group include:

  • Provision of a donations box for visitors in the Cathedral entrance
  • Support to Parish pilgrimages
  • Commission of silk banners to be used in procession at major services
  • Contributions to the Cathedral to assist with staff training and refreshments after the installation of the Dean
  • Sponsorship of concerts during the Cathedral Arts Festival
  • Loan of £2500 to produce a Cathedral Guide Book
  • Supporting the redesign of the website (2010)
